Cryptocurrencies are all the craze these days, everyone wants their share of Cryptos like BitCoin, Ethereum, Monero etc. If you understand the concept behind cryptos, you’ll find that these currencies need to be mined – a process which utilizes your system’s processing power (CPU,GPU) to solve cryptographic problems. Succesfully solving a problem earns you a predefined amount of cryptocurrency.
Now, the concept became popular after ‘ThePirateBay‘ installed the script on their website and users started noticing abnormal CPU usage. The script came to light, and TPB admitted to testing the script without user’s permission.
Here is the script in action on TPB.
Notice the change in CPU usage when the script is enabled vs when it’s disabled.
How Do You Block CoinHive?
All major Adblocking extensions have added a filter for the CoinHive mining script. So all you need to do is update your AdBlocking extension.
If you are using another extension and need to manually block the script, then just block the following URL in its blacklist.
The script has become notoriously famous among Malware distributers who are looking to earn a quick buck from their infected systems. Websites are being hijacked and injected with the script to make money off of unsuspecting users.
