Recent statistics have revealed that a significant number of businesses are yet to formalise a procedure, which indicates that many of them are simply not taking the matter seriously enough.

Tips to Prevent Data Loss.
Never store all your data and documents in the same partition which resides you Operating System
The reason being if your system undergoes a failure in the Booting or Startup area and the Operating System refuses to respond then only option you might have will be to Re-Format the Disk with a new Operating System which will wipe the data stored on that partition.
Keep Hard Copies of your Important Documents.
If you have important documents in the form of Word,Excel,PDF,Images etc. It would be a good idea to keep a Hard Copy i.e Print Out of your files just incase the Digital Copy (Soft Copy) gets corrupt, You can scan your Hard copy and remake the digital data.
Install a Good Antivirus.
Virus and Malware always have a tendency to corrupt your important data, Well they are partly made for the same. If you do not have proper protection against the same, You will be at risk of getting infected resulting in corrupt data. My personal suggestion would be to use Avira Antivirus as I have found it pretty good against most detections. Coupled with a Firewall like ZoneAlarm or Comodo.
Keep the System Optimized. DONOT Over-Optimize.
You should keep your system in good working condition by regularly Cleaning Junk & Temporary files, Use CCleaner and Doing Disk Defragmenting. But make sure you do not Over Tweak or Over Optimize as it might result in bad performance and do more bad than good.
