Downloading torrents remotely is handy when you have to download something important off the Torrent but your home computer is inaccessible to you at the moment. You want the file to be ready to use when you reach home. In this case you can have your Bittorrent Client on home pc start the downloading automatically while you remotely load the torrent file into it (provided the computer is switched ON).
BitTorrent provides a service known as ‘BitTorrent Remote’ which lets you have the complete BitTorrent client interface on the web. Another method you can use to serve the same purpose is by using Dropbox. I will explain both the methods below.
1. Download Torrents Remotely with BitTorrent Remote.
Step 1. Open BitTorrent on your PC > Preferences > Remote.
Step 2. Tick the ‘Enable BitTorrent Remote Access’.
Step 3. Enter a unique Computer Name, Consider it as your Username and also a Password. Next you will be prompted to set a Security Question and Answer. Complete that and you are done with the Client configuration part.
Step 4. To load any torrents to your Home computer’s BitTorrent, Just visit BitTorrent Remote (http://remote.bittorrent.com/) and you will be asked to perform either of these to get to the login screen.
1. Move your mouse around to fill the progress bar if you are on desktop.
2. Touch and move the screen around if you are on mobile.
Step 5. Login to the web interface using the Username and Password you had set on the client.
Step 6. Now you can use the remote client from the web interface just like your home’s torrent client. You can perform almost all of the functions like Add Torrent, Remove Torrent, Pause, Stop etc.
You can use the remote.bittorrent.com even on your Mobile, But I couldn’t find an option to load torrent from SD Card. While you have the option to Add torrent from URL. Rest of the functions are pretty much same.
2. Download Torrents Remotely with Dropbox.
This method needs you to have a Dropbox Account (Free) and the Dropbox Desktop Software installed. When you setup the Dropbox Software, Make sure you remember where you setup the Dropbox Sync Folder. EG: D:/Dropbox
Step 1. Open your Dropbox Account and Create a new folder in it named “Torrents”, Let the desktop application sync and create this folder on your Desktop computer.
Step 2. Open BitTorrent and Go to Preferences > Directories.
Step 3. Tick the option which says “Automatically load .torrents from:”.
Step 4. Browse to your Dropbox folder and Select the “Torrents” folder which you had created.
Step 5. Now when ever you want to download torrents remotely, Just login to your Dropbox account and add the torrent file to the “Torrents” folder. It will automatically get synced to your Desktop computer which will load the torrent file to BitTorrent and start the download.
You might want to test this once before you rely on it because, While loading the torrent the client usually gives a popup asking you to select the download folder and other options, So you have to check the box that says “Do not show this again” to have this process go smooth.
