Almost one year ago, The Cloud Storage giant Megaupload was taken down badly in a Copyright case and the owner Kim Dotcom got into huge trouble. Now you all might be aware of the whole fuss, if not take a look at this article : Megaupload.
Anyways Kim is back with another project and the base remains the same, Cloud storage.. But this time he is all prepared to face the worst. The new website namely “Mega” is loaded with features which focus on Privacy as one of the top priority. Although this is not the first website to have features similar but this surely is the one to implement them on a wide scale.
The website URL is www.mega.co.nz hence by using a New Zealand Top Level Domain, Kim has prevented any messing with the USA Government.
So What Is The Difference Between Dropbox And Mega?
Dropbox and Mega are two cloud storage giants but what Dropbox lacks and Mega tops is Mega’s privacy factor. After Megauploads take down, Kim has built a complete defense mechanism to safeguard itself and its customers from Copyright sues and other Lawsuit.
Let me explain how it works, When you upload a File to Mega’s cloud storage the file is first Locally encrypted and then sent to the server. All this happens from the browser (Thanks to HTML5). They have built the site in such a manner that even though the cloud stores the files for you but neither Kim nor does anyone else know what the file contains and even they are unaware of the file name. All they have is a big lump of encrypted file which is useless to anyone without the correct cryptographic key.
All the encryption procedure is based on the password you set when you register the account with Mega. And since Mega has no records of what your Password is, You can’t use the “Forgot password” option to recover your forgotten password. Once you forget your password, Forget your files too.. You won’t get it back.
When you signup on Mega, It generates the 2048-bit RSA Public/Private Key Pair for your account. To strengthen it further, It uses your Mouse movements and keystrokes. This technique is similar to the one used by the Truecrypt software.
What Is The Use Of All These Encryption,Decryption Stuffs?
Let us take an example of Facebook and Mega, (Just an example)
When a top notch Government official asks Facebook to reveal some data about your account, They are forced to reveal it.. Why? Because they have your data with them and they have access to it.
Now when that official asks Mega to reveal all your uploaded data.. They will reveal too (it is in their TOS that they will co operate with law enforcement) but only that Encrypted lump of files which is useless without the decryption key. Since Mega doesn’t have the decryption key they can’t unlock the files. Remember! Only you have the decryption key to the files. This saves Mega from any Copyright infringement attacks.
How Much Free Space And What Are The Paid Plans?
The free plan on Mega offers a whooping 50GB Free Cloud Storage, Enough for most of us!
and then there are the Paid Pro Plans which are divided into three plans. Take a look below:
There is a feature called Inbox and Contacts where you can add other Mega users to contact, You have to enter their Email Address and an Invite will be sent if the person is not already on Mega.
Btw Mega recommends you use Google Chrome to use Mega as they claim its better at handling HTML 5, Personally I don’t feel so and still prefer Firefox.
The service is in Beta and more features are yet to come I suppose. Lets wait and see.. If you liked this article do share it with your friends on Facebook,Twitter and Google Plus. The buttons below will assist you.
