What is Truecrypt?
TrueCrypt is an open-source disk encryption software, with true crypt you can encrypt and password protect your precious files. Here I will show you how to protect your files with Truecrypt.
What is Encryption?
In cryptography, encryption is the process of transforming information (referred to as plaintext) using an algorithm (called cipher) to make it unreadable and unrecognizable.
This unreadable text can be made readable again by using the reverse of algorithm used to crypt the text this is known as Decryption.
Steps to use Truecrypt.
Step 1. Download and install Truecrypt.
Step 2. Open Truecrypt.exe from start menu.
Step 4. There are 3 Options. I will explain in brief what each of them is.
- Create an Encrypted file container.
This creates a Virtual File with a fixed size where you can add files to encrypt.
- Encrypt a non-system partition/drive
This option helps in Encrypting USB Drives and make hidden partitions.
- Encrypt the system partition or entire system drive.
This option helps in encrypting the entire computer.
Most of you should use the Encrypted container file for normal encryption.
Step 5. Click Create an Encrypted file container.
Step 6. Select Standard Truecrypt Volume.
Step 7. Click Select File.
Step 8. Enter a File Name and click Save, Tick the Never Save History.
Step 9. In the next window leave the options as it is.
Step 10. Enter the size for the container where you want to store the files.
Step 11. Enter a Password to protect the file, Uncheck use keyfiles and display password.
Step 12. In the next window move your mouse pointer inside the truecrypt window as long as you can. The longer you move the more the encryption gets scrambled and the more the security increases. Next click Format.
Step 13. Click OK on the successful window and click Exit.
How To Use The Created Container To Store Files Securely.
Step 1. Open Truecrypt.exe.
Step 2. Click Select File, Browse to the location where you saved the container.
Step 3. Check Never Save History, Select a Drive letter from the upper window and Click Mount.
Step 4. Enter the password, Uncheck the 3 boxes.
Step 5. Now go to My Computer and you will see a New Drive.
Step 6. You can Copy, Paste ,Delete files to this drive.
Step 7. After Copying the file Click Dismount in the Truecrypt.
Step 8. Click Exit.
You can now protect any of your files with High Security that takes many years to crack without the correct password.
