The increasing number of Google algorithm updates has forced every webmaster to go after link profile cleanups. And majority of the process requires your complete backlink profile to be available in order to inspect for bad links. Every SEO Blog out there suggests going to Google Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs, Majestic SEO or Open Site Explorer to download your link profile. Then when you do create a report for your website, You find that this report is limited to only a few tens or hundred backlinks and in order to get the complete report you need to upgrade to a paid member.
What most people don’t realize is that most of these Backlink analysis websites provide you the complete reports for your ‘own’ website completely free. And the upgrade is only necessary if you want to analyze the backlink profile of your competitor.
In this article, I will be showing you how to generate a complete backlink profile for your website which includes all the backlinks that were and are pointing to your website.
I will cover the two major backlink analysis tools – Ahrefs and Majestic SEO. Open Site Explorer gives you free reports which is sufficient for most websites (limit 10,000 links) and Google Webmaster Tools gives out reports for free.
Ahrefs is known for its massive and frequently updated index of backlinks. The website picks up almost all of the backlinks a website has and displays it in easy to understand format with the help of Graphs and Charts. The Anchor Text details are very valuable to a webmaster who is in process of cleaning up his link profile.
Step 1. Open Ahrefs website and Click on Register Free Account > Fill in the details and select Free Account > Verify your Email & Activate the account.
Step 2. After verification click on this url : Create Own Domain Report.
Step 3. Fill in your Domain details in the form that is shown and click on Add Domain.
Step 4. Next you need to verify that you are the owner of the Domain by either
- Adding a Meta Tag to your homepage.
- Creating a page on your root domain.
- Creating a DNS Record.
I have seen that in case of Ahrefs, the first two options don’t always work well (but you may try that first) and the DNS record always works, So here I will use the DNS Record verification method.
If you are using a Shared hosting such as Hostgator, Then adding the DNS Record is pretty simple. Just click on Simple DNS Zone Editor.
Select your Domain > Scroll to the Add a CNAME Record and fill in the url ahrefs gave you, example : (ee38eve97dabcd.yourdomain.com) into the Name: field and type in ahrefs.com into CNAME: field. Then click on Add CNAME Record.
Now go back to Ahrefs and click on Verify Now. Your verification will be successful > Click on View your reports.
Step 5. It might take some time to generate your backlink report but after generation of the report, You will get your Domain name in the list, Click on it and you will be taken to your complete backlink summary which will have all the current backlinks to your website that Ahrefs is aware of.
Step 6. To export the backlinks, Click on the Backlinks tab below the Overview tab > Look for the Export button on the right hand side > Start Export and save the CSV file.
Now you have successfully exported your website’s complete backlink profile from Ahrefs.
2. Majestic SEO
Majestic SEO is again known for its massive index of backlinks and also that it stores historic index of every website. This helps you to identify new and lost backlinks and will be of great help in determining the factors responsible for loss of backlinks and to compare your link profile before and after link cleanup process.
Step 1. Open Majestic SEO website and Click on Sign up > Fill in the account details > Verify Email.
Step 2. Visit the Webmaster Tools page of Majestic SEO.
Step 3. Fill in your Domain name in the field and click on Verify.
Step 4. Now you will be given 3 verification methods.
- Adding a Meta Tag to your homepage.
- Uploading a text file to your domain root.
- Linking your Google Webmaster Tools account.
I suggest using the 2nd option that is uploading a text file to your domain root. Hence select that option and click Next and follow the guide that it shows you.
Basically what you have to do is:
- Download the text file it gives you.
- Upload it to your website’s root.
- Open that page in your browser.
- Go back to Majestic SEO and click on the Verify button.
Step 5. Now your verification will be complete and you will be able to generate backlink reports for your domain by clicking on the Create a free report for www.yourdomain.com button.
Step 6. Then select your report type (Standard, Advanced etc) and Create Report.
Step 7. To export your backlinks visit the My Reports page > Click on the Report Name > Download Options > Download Backlinks > Prepare Download.
Step 8. Now visit the Report Download page and click on the report name to download a compressed CSV of your backlink profile.
Now you have successfully exported your website’s complete backlink profile from Majestic SEO.
