Recently I came across BitTorrent Sync, A File Sharing/File Syncing service by the very same creators of BitTorrent (well it was obvious from the name). The service is based on Peer to Peer file sharing, similar to how the original torrents work. Except in this case, your shared files can only be downloaded by select people instead of the whole world.
The service is claimed to be NSA proof – which means NSA can’t snoop into your shared files. All the traffic is encrypted with a Private Key. But one of the most common questions about BitTorrent Sync is “How is BitTorrent Sync different from Dropbox?”
BitTorrent Sync Vs. Dropbox
I will try to make it a simple comparison type answer.
|1.||Cloud||Doesn't upload to Cloud, Syncs directly from one device to another device.||Uploads all files to Cloud, Syncs to other devices from there.|
|2.||Space||Unlimited Storage Space - Only limited to the size of your Hard Disk.||Gives 2GB storage space to starters.|
|3.||Cost||Completely Free||Has Paid option where you get more space and bandwidth.|
|4.||Bandwidth||Unlimited Bandwidth.||Limited Bandwidth for free users.|
|5.||File size limit||No File Size limit.||Files uploaded via website has a 10GB per file limit (keep in mind the free space provided is much less than file size limit).|
|6.||Always online||Home computer must be always switched ON.||Just upload to cloud and switch OFF your devices.|
|7.||Sharing with others||You can't share your files with others who don't have BitTorrent Sync application installed. If they have it installed, they will need your secret key to download files.||You can share your uploaded files with anyone with a Public link.|
|8.||Ease of use||Is a bit more complicated to use than usual file syncing services.||Simple and sweet.|
|9.||Best use||Best way to share huge files and projects.||Expensive when sharing huge files, but best for sharing and keeping backups of smaller files.|
Although I have only compared BitTorrent Sync to Dropbox, It is very similar comparison to that with Google Drive or OneDrive (previously known as SkyDrive).
Step 1. Download BitTorrent Sync on your Home PC and start the installation.
Step 3. Choose a Folder where you would like to keep your Synced Files.
Step 4. Now the software has generated a Secret Key for your Synced Folder. Copy it to a Notepad. You need to send this to the person with whom you want to share the Folder (more on that soon) > Next.
Step 5. Go through the Tour and Finish the setup.
Sharing Files with Others.
Step 1. Open the Sync Folder you created during installation. Copy a file or folder that you want to share, into that Sync Folder.
Step 2. Ask the other person to install BitTorrent Sync (refer them to this article) and send them your Secret Key the software generated earlier (the one that you copied to a notepad).
Step 3. Once the person opens their BitTorrent Sync application, Ask them to click on the ‘Add a Sync Folder’ button.
Step 4. Paste in the Secret Key that you gave them, Browse to a Folder where they want your shared files to be downloaded to > OK.
That is it, Now when you look at the ‘Transfers’ tab at the top in the software, You will see that the files have started syncing. You can remove a Synced Folder by clicking on the ‘Remove Sync Folder’. Your already Synced files/folders won’t be deleted when you remove a folder from the software.
